A bold new initiative is set to revolutionize the way we tackle aortic stenosis (AS), a condition that has long been underdiagnosed and undertreated. The time has come to accelerate diagnosis and treatment, and this initiative aims to do just that.
AS is a serious heart valve condition where the aortic valve narrows, restricting blood flow from the heart. If left untreated, it can lead to devastating consequences, including heart failure and even death. It's time to shine a light on this often-overlooked issue and provide hope to those affected.
The American Heart Association, with its vision of a healthier world for all, is taking a stand. They're expanding their support for patients with moderate AS by launching a nationwide campaign to raise awareness and improve access to clinical trials. This initiative, a collaborative effort with Kardigan, leverages the Association's existing infrastructure and network of hospitals and heart valve clinics.
Dr. Sreekanth Vemulapalli, the Association's volunteer clinical leader, emphasizes the urgency: "Aortic stenosis is a serious condition, yet many go undiagnosed until it's too late. By identifying potential trial participants and supporting clinical research, we can shape a brighter future for those affected by this disease."
The initiative will engage at least 40 hospitals and their affiliated clinics, connecting more individuals with cutting-edge research opportunities. It's about promoting emerging medical therapies and ensuring guideline-based care reaches those who need it most.
Jay Edelberg, M.D., Ph.D., co-founder of Kardigan, shares their mission: "At Kardigan, we're dedicated to transforming cardiovascular disease treatment. We want to go beyond symptom management and redefine care where it's needed most. Improving access to clinical trials is a crucial step towards innovation and ensuring more people receive timely diagnoses and treatments."
But here's where it gets controversial... The initiative will also explore barriers to trial enrollment through a healthcare provider climate survey. This survey aims to identify solutions that increase participation in structural heart disease research. It's a step towards ensuring equal access and representation in clinical trials.
And this is the part most people miss... The American Heart Association's Target: Aortic Stenosis™ program, supported by Edwards Lifesciences, has already managed over 2,200 people with moderate AS through its quality improvement network. This new initiative builds upon that success, aiming to further accelerate diagnosis and treatment.
